Chromed cast brass Diesel Locomotive Manufacturers Nameplate “The English Electric Co. Ltd” with “EECL” monogram to the centre. 39x7in. o/all. The plate originates from a Tasmanian Locomotive. The country had X Class English Electric Locomotives from the 1950’s which were narrow gauge, 32 in total and sounded like BR Class 20 engines. The plate may be from one of these. Great Western Railway Locomotive Nameplate “Mendip” as carried by one of the early ‘Duke’ Class 4-4-0’s No. 3288 built at Swindon in 1897. They were originally built to work over the Devon and Cornwall gradients but were later superseded by the ‘Bulldogs’. The nameplates were carried on a supporting plain splasher to clear the external driving wheel spring. On withdrawal these splashers were sometimes cut off the nameplates by Swindon Works at the request of the purchaser like this example. | SOLD FOR £1800 |
