“D1010” Cabside Numberplate. Aluminium characters and beading on a steel back plate. 33x10in. o/all. The loco named “Western Campaigner” was w/d in Feb 1977 from Laira and stored at Newton Abbot until purchased for preservation by Foster Yeoman at Merehead and loco moved there in July 1977, re-numbered “D1035” and renamed “Western Yeoman” for publicity purposes. It went to the GW Society Didcot in May 1986 for restoration where it received presumably these new D1010 plates but retained “Western Yeoman” nameplates. The loco went to the West Somerset Railway in Jan 1991 and was re-numbered back to D1035 in June 1998. Our cabside would therefore have been carried by the locomotive during the 1986 – 1991 period. |

In BR days it was allocated at Exmouth Junction, Salisbury and Bournemouth, w/d from the latter in Oct 1965 and cut up at Eastleigh in Feb 1966. The plate has a welded repair, the condition it was in when the original purchaser collected it from Basingstoke MPD literally as it was taken of the engine! |
