An original length of iron fishbelly Rail embossed with the title “Mansfield & Pinxton R. Co.” Fine condition 39in. long. An astonishing surviving relic from this early company which opened in April 1818 to goods traffic between the two towns. Passengers were carried from 1832 when a coach was introduced each Thursday (market day) for 2nd. & 3rd class travellers from the Boat Inn at Pinxton Wharf. The line was 4’-4” gauge and horse drawn, primarily to transport coal to Mansfield from the head of the Pinxton branch of the Cromford canal. The company was absorbed by the Midland Railway in July 1847 and closed by them. It was re-opened in Sept. 1849 as part of the Pye Bridge – Mansfield line. |
