169 Cast brass Locomotive Crest of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment as carried by a Longmoor Military Railway 0-6-2 Tank built by Kitsons of Leeds in 1886 (Works No. 2977) for the Taff Vale Rly. Their No. 168 becoming GWR No. 579. Withdrawn by the GWR in Oct. 1926 the loco went to Longmoor in March 1927 and was named “Kitchener”. It was renamed “Wellington” in 1938 when the crest of the Duke was fitted. The Duke of Wellington although a Field Marshall was not a commission officer in the Royal Engineers so was not entitled to have the R.E. crest usually fitted to Longmoor locos. The loco was scrapped at Longmoor in the 1940’s. The crest is 8.75in dia. and is stamped in the back “LMR Wellington” and “R” for right hand side. It is mounted onto a painted wooden board with a replica cast brass “Wellington” nameplate in the correct style 31in. long. A nicely presented pair. A folder of paperwork and photos relating to Wellington and the LMR accompanies the lot. 181 S & DJR small enamel Signal Repeater Description Plate “Moorewood”. A location between Chilcompton and Binegar.
170 Miniature steel Single Line Staff from the Longmoor Military Railway. The end stamped “Longmoor - Liss Forest Road”. Very good ex-service condition with remains of original red paint to the “B” configuration end cap. 182 Cast iron Locomotive Smokebox Numberplate “68032” as carried by Ministry of Supply War Department 0-6-0 Saddle Tank built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns in 1945 (Works No. 7211) WD No. 75281. To LNER Stock as Class J94 No. 8032 in 1946 and BR 68032 in Nov. 1949. A York loco for many years until withdrawal in May 1964. R.S&H only built 7 of this Class of 75 locos. The plate is face restored only. The back bears embossed ‘radius’ details and is impressed with other Class types.
171 GWR silver plated Cutlery. Eleven items including “Tregenna Castle Hotel, Marine Dept, Refreshment Dept., Restaurant Car, Luncheon Basket, etc. Good selection all in very good crisp condition. (11). 183 Early pattern GWR Carriage Roof Pot Lamp, bearing the typical GWR embossed star to the top cap. The brass collar is incised “Ridsdales Railway Lamp & Lighting Co. Ltd. Minories London”. Brass plate to chimney “Wm. McGeoch & Co. Makers Birmingham & Glasgow”. Brass plate to inside “Shallis & Thomas Patent No. 25649”. A lamp of some quality retaining the original enamel internal chimney, glass globe with porcelain surround and all other fittings. A very rare lamp possibly dating back to the GWR Broad Gauge era.
172 Single Line leather Tablet Pouch and integral Hoop. Rivetted brass surround to tablet aperture. v.g.c. 184 Two (LNER) Cathedral Plates by Wedgwood. Durham and Peterborough Cathedrals from the third series produced for the Festival of Britain in 1951. Descriptions underneath together with the F.O.B. logo and “Illustration courtesy of the LNERly.”
173 Rhymney Railway large brass pear shaped Paycheck. Boldly stamped “RR No. 4 Parade. Cardiff”. 57x50mm. overall. Opened by the RR as Crockherbtown in April 1871, the station was re-named Cardiff in Nov. 1888 and Cardiff Parade in 1924. Closure came April 1928, so this is a rare survivor. 185 BR(Southern Region) double royal pictorial Poster “New Milton Barton-on-Sea & Milford-on-Sea” featuring artwork by V.L.Danvers. Some light creasing to edges and a small tear to top edge otherwise v.g.c. with light folds only.
174 LSWR square fronted 3 aspect Handlamp. The top bears a brass plate “W&W 96” (Way & Works) and the aspect drum has the same number. The body has an embossed brass “L&SWR Co.” plate and is stamped “L&SWR 3516”. Complete with “L&SWR” sloping front vessel, “SR” burner, “LSWR” reflector and all glasses. Restored. 186 S&DJR Oil Can and metal Detonator Can both stamped with company initials together with a wooden rail chock with brass plate attached “S&D Rly. key from track, Lyncombe Vale, Bath. Closed 3. 1966”. (3)
175 GWR wooden handled Clothes Brush with company initials picked out in contrasting bristles. 355mm. (14in) long. 187 Pictorial enamel Advertising Sign “Burma Sauce. The only sauce I dare give father”. Features a boy holding a bottle of the said product. Some very well executed restoration to top right hand corner and edge not affecting graphics or picture. Superb colour & shine and a scarce enamel. 770x510mm. (30x20in).
176 Carriage Print “The Cinque Port of Hastings, Sussex” by Jack Merriott from the Southern Region Series issued in 1952. This is the larger format print and is the third of the full set of five in our sale today. v.g.c. and in an original type glazed frame. See also lots 7, 151, 263 and 374. 188 Cast iron Locomotive Shedplate “87A” (Neath). Face restored only. An uncommon code for such a large shed.
177 GWR Permanent Way Dept. Thunderer Whistle. The barrel sides nicely incised “GWR P.Way 1775”. Working order and complete with chain and button hole attachment. 189 LSWR Marine Department small 16mm. silver Button as worn by pursers on their waiscoats. Features “L&SW” gothic letters above a fouled anchor with laurel leaves below. Not listed in Froggatt.
178 A Somerset Central Railway wooden Change Bowl clearly marked “S.C.R.” underneath. Together with two other unmarked change bowls. All originated from the S&DJR at Templecombe. (3) 190 S & DJR aluminium Single Line Tablet engraved “Bath - Midford 3”. This is the first section on the line taking in Devonshire Bank, Devonshire and Combe Down Tunnels and the picturesque Lyncombe Vale. A rare early tablet which pre-dates the fibre examples.
179 “LSWR Beware of Trains” cast iron Notice. Unrestored. 191 “Cosens & Company Limited” china Teapot with matching lid by Dunn Bennett & Co. Boldly face marked with the full title in a belted garter around the company house flag. The teapot with its pewter non-drip spout end is in v.g.c. The lid has two repaired rim breaks. This company operated as the Weymouth, Bournemouth & Swanage Steam Packets Ltd. Working paddle steamers between these resorts, Lulworth Cove and the Isle of Wight. The company was later taken over by Red Funnel Steamers.
180 Southern Railway enamel Station Target Sign “Ventnor”. Some very well executed restoration to this scarce target which is mounted onto a backing board. Fine deep colour with very good shine from the Isle of Wight station opened in Sept. 1866 and approached via a long single line tunnel under the bulk of St. Boniface Down, the tunnel portal being close to the platform end.
