1 S&DJR small enamel Signal Repeater Description Plate “Evercreech Jct”. The name most synominous with the Somerset and Dorset Railway. 13 Full set of fifty volumes of “What Happened to Steam” by P.B. Hands. Each volume carries a wealth of data on each locomotive. Shed allocations from 1957, withdrawal dates, where stored and where scrapped. A fine clean unbound set.
2 Cast brass Nameplate “City of Exeter”. As carried by a road locomotive type traction engine built by Burrells of Thetford in 1912 (Works No. 3395) for Hancock’s Brickworks in Exeter. The engine was subsequently purchased for preservation and has been renamed “The Dalesman”. The plate is devoid of paint and is lightly polished only. 356x89mm. (14x3.5in). 14 LSWR untitled cast iron Bridge Numberplate “317”. Face restored a while ago. From a structure at Buckhorn Weston West of Salisbury on the West of England Main Line.
3 “Stephens Ink for all temperatures” enamel Advertising Sign complete with a thermometer graduated from zero to 140 degrees. Maker’s name to base “J.A. Jordan & Sons Bilston” and date marked for August 1909 so almost 100 years old!! The back exhibits Stephens’ terms and conditions of display and other information. Light chipping only. 930mm. tall (36.6in). 15 “London & North Western & Great Western Joint Railways” Third Class folding card Season Ticket from Chester in connection with the Royal Agricultural Show June 17th - 24th 1893. An un-issued specimen ticket in fine condition.
4 Oval cast brass Locomotive Builders Plate “LMS Built 1943 GWR”. As carried by a LMS Class 7F, later 8F 2-8-0 built by the GWR at Swindon in the number range 8400 - 26, BR 48400 - 26. A member of this batch No. 48409 was allocated to Bath Green Park for freight working over the S&D line in 1964 / 65. The plate is lightly face restored only and has “LMS” incised in the back. Torch damage to one bolt hole. 268x153mm. (10.5x6in). 16 BR(S) fully flanged enamel Doorplate “Lamps”. Re-touched chips to screwholes and flanges otherwise v.g.c. with very good colour and shine.
5 BR(S) enamel Station Direction Sign “Crewkerne Station” with “Southern” totem and pointing arrow. Minor chips to one screwhole only otherwise fine condition. 1342x298mm. (53x12in). A former LSWR station between Yeovil and Chard Jct. opened in July 1860. 17 Great North of Scotland Railway original Coat of Arms Transfer nicely mounted onto a painted board and displayed in a glazed oak frame with gilt slip. Ivorine plate to top “Presented by H.N. Gresley Esq.” (soon to be Sir Nigel). This is the first of our coats of arms in the sale today which were originally in the collection of the Railway Club of London, later moved for display in the Woolwich Railway Museum which is now closed. 435x355mm. (17x14in).
6 Southern Railway cast iron ‘Forty Shillings’ Trespass Notice. Restored. 18 GWR ‘1947’ pattern wooden cased Signal Box Block Instrument for Up and Down Line Working. Bakelite commutator, brass plunger and “Clearing Point Fouled / Train at Signal” flaps.
7 Carriage Print “The Cinque Port of Hythe, Kent” by Jack Merriott from the Southern Region series issued in 1952. This is the large format print and is the first of the full set of five in our sale today. v.g.c. and in an original type glazed frame. See also lot nos. 151, 176, 263 and 374. 19 GWR Webb & Thompson Single Line Staff. Steel with brass rings and bearing two cast brass plates “Lidford” and “Lifton”. A section of the Yelverton - Launceston Branch which closed in December 1962.
8 LSWR four aspect Handlamp. The body is stamped “L&SWR 354” and “H.Emmett”. The top has a large brass plate “Signal Lineman Launceston” and a small “17” plate. Complete with “SWR” vessel, “SR” burner, reflector and all glasses. Unrestored. A station on the ‘Withered Arm’ section between Halwill Jct. and Wadebridge opened in July 1886 and closed in Oct. 1966. 20 LSWR Station Train Destination enamel Plate “Wimborne Verwood Daggon’s Road Fordingbridge Salisbury”. The rural route north of Bournemouth which traversed three counties and closed in May 1964. Chip to left edge only. 212x78mm. (8.3x3in).
9 Set of three Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway nickel Uniform Buttons bearing script initials “SJC” (Somerset Joint Committee). Examples are 15mm., 22mm. and the rare extra large 25mm. over coat size. All in v.g.c. (3). 21 Peninsular & Oriental Steamship Company silver plated Coffee Pot by Mappin & Webb. Crisply face marked with the “P&O” rope script below a rising sun device all within an encircling rope surround. Superb condition.
10 North British Railway Guards Pocket Watch by the American Watch Company, Waltham, Massachusetts. The back of the case nicely lettered “NBR 1568” and the enamelled dial is marked “J.G. Graves Waltham Mass”. Small hairline crack to dial otherwise very good condition and complete with winding key. 22 Southern Railway Beware of Trains cast iron Notice, LSWR pattern. Restored a while ago.
11 Three Signal Box brass cased Bell Plungers mounted on board. One bears an enamel description ring “Basingstoke West Local” and others are engraved “Platform Bell” and “Push to Release 3”. 23 Locomotive Cab Vacuum Brake Control Handle with wooden hand grip and spring release. Very good ex-loco condition.
12 Large metal Milk Churn. “Tare 54lbs” plate to body and large elliptical brass plate to lid “Empty W.T.B. Cox S&DJR Bath”. Complete with two side handles. 890mm. tall. (35in). 24 Box of mainly hard backed Books. Photo albums and histories, Southern interest. Good condition throughout (16).
